“Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear.”
Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games
Why I like it:
I have a particular liking for the series as a whole, and have a lot of favourite from this book. But this one remains one of the most memorable because it conveys something I hold strong in my heart.
Why it finds a place in my top 100
In a continuous cycle of hope and despair that is called life, there are precious few things to celebrate. Everything becomes a cause for fear, and even little things can grow up to be frightening. But what works in our favour is that small emotion, called hope – the thing that keeps us going, no matter how many times we fall, and the thing that keeps the desire to live alive.
Fear is a very motivating emotion, often making us do thing that we would not otherwise even be able to think of, conceive of. Fear can make people do a lot of things that are near impossible normally. But fear can also quickly turn crippling. It can also paralyze the person completely, making any further action impossible. Whatever is said, it remains that fear is basically a negative emotion. The only emotion that is able to conquer fear is hope, the positive driving force, the patronus to the dementor that is called fear – the ultimate conquerer.
