The Heroes of the Olympus Series by Rick Riordan
For the final post, a complete favourite character.
A descendant of Poseidon, Frank had amazing powers including the much-coveted shapeshifting powers. He makes Percy Jackson feel jealous and dazzles him with his unassuming but powerful attitude.
Be it the way he does sincere work for the Roman demigod camp, and is the typical underdog to praetor level rise, Frank Zhang is every fiction lover’s dream. His descent from the Chinese, and the valuable lessons that has imparted in him, and his unique abilities that make him a very important part of the prophesied seven, make Zhang an interesting character study.
I loved the beginning of the series where he is introduced, and how his character arc developed from there. His tangent with Hazel, who is the child of Pluto, and his with the other six, including the fire brand Leo are the key turning points of the five book series.
Frank was created as that character who was a child of a different god, with the powers of another god, making him well near invincible. In his war tactics he becomes Ares’s child, and in his water abilities, he is Poseidon’s descendant. A combination that makes him lethal, but with an attitude that makes him an unassumingly endearing character was what worked with Frank Zhang.
The song I dedicate to this character: Ludovico Einaudi – “Elegy for the Arctic” – Official Live (Greenpeace)
